Description:
Commissioned in the 1960s, the Swedish Sjöormen-class was among the most advanced conventional submarines of its era. It featured a teardrop-shaped hull, high underwater speed, and was a forerunner in integrating air-independent propulsion prototypes.
This 30-inch handcrafted model is built using the traditional plank-on-frame method and high-quality Canadian red cedar, Teak, Mahogany,..From the smooth hull curve to the minimalist sail (conning tower)and propeller assembly, every line reflects Cold War innovation in undersea warfare. The building process takes approximately 3 to 6 months depending on complexity.

History:
The Swedish HSwMS Sjöormen Submarine was the lead ship of the Sjöormen-class (Project A11) submarines built for the Swedish Navy during the Cold War. Launched in 1967, it represented a significant leap forward in Swedish submarine design, introducing a teardrop hull shape inspired by the U.S. Navy's nuclear submarines — optimized for speed, maneuverability, and silence.
Designed by Kockums AB, the Sjöormen-class was ahead of its time, featuring advanced sonar, retractable diving planes, and enhanced hydrodynamics that made it highly effective for littoral (coastal) defense. These submarines were ideal for operations in the Baltic Sea, where shallow depths and tight spaces demanded stealth and agility.
The HSwMS Sjöormen and its sister ships served Swedish until the late 1990s. Four of them were later sold to Singapore, where they continued service under the Challenger-class after modernization.
As one of Swedish’s most innovative Cold War submarines, HSwMS Sjöormen played a key role in shifting submarine design toward stealth-focused, performance-optimized vessels suited for modern naval strategy.
